It seems people are curious about my hair. They want to know how long it took for it to get to its current length, what products I use, what do I do to define my curls and what is my hair texture. Numerous people have asked me these questions and I do try to answer. However, it does get frustrating answering the same questions repeatedly. Therefore, I decided to do a blog post here.
I believe most people know what they should and should not do to their hair. Unfortunately, most of us can get lazy and take the easy way out, which is in most instances means it will be damaging to our hair. I was extremely fortunate and had a mother that would not allow me to use heat on my hair and I had to use rollers. Of course, at the time I could not understand how she could be so “mean” to me. However, now I am grateful because it became a normal part of my life. Even when I left home for college and was on my own, I would roller set my hair. Yes, I did use a curling iron or blow dryer. However, I utilized those tools maybe once every week or two.
So what do I think is the secret to my long healthy curly hair? I don’t have a guaranteed tried and true answer for you. However, I can provide you a list of the things that I do personally and they are the following:
1. Drink tons of water
2. Exercise regularly (I notice I have to cut my hair more often when I’m working out on a daily basis)
3. Do not use products that contain sulfates as they can be very drying to MY curls
4. I try to only wash my hair three times at the most a week (will do so when I’m swimming)
5. Use a conditioner that moisturizes my hair (if my hair doesn’t feel like seaweed after I have conditioned I look for a new one)
6. Use natural or mostly natural products (I noticed an enormous difference in my curls once I started using natural products)
7. Deep condition once a week (twice a month minimum)
8. Air dry my hair as much as possible instead of diffusing
9. If I diffuse I use the low/cool settings
10. When it is hot outside and I’m running errands I will put hair in two braids and put on a baseball cap or just put in two braids.
11. Apply conditioner before I go swimming, then put hair in a ponytail braid it and put in a bun
12. Straighten hair once or twice a year (only using a flat-iron and not a blow dryer)
13. Evaluate my ends once a week will cut those split ends (I do not hang on to split ends)
14. Only go to a stylist when I feel my hair needs to be shaped again (otherwise I trim my own split ends like I said above).
As I said previous, I cannot guarantee that if you follow those exact things listed above that you too will have long curly healthy hair because I not psychic LOL! However, I can say in most likelihood you will end up with healthy curly hair. When it comes to length, while I do believe that taking care of it does encourage it to grow I do also believe that genetics can play a role. But, can and will are two different things. Therefore, if you treat your hair like you treat your skin and your body (in a healthy way hopefully) you will most likely see the results you desire!
I decided to address hair type last because I do not understand why this is of importance. Hair type has nothing to do with choosing the best product for your hair. If it did, how can you explain the fact that people with wavy hair (2b/c) use Kinky-Curly Products AND people with kinky/coily hair (4a/b) use those same products? You will also have these same people using Komaza Hair Care Products. Perhaps its because they are natural products and can be used by anyone. Whatever the case it may be, in my opinion it just doesn’t matter! 🙂
